For grandparents, spending time with their grandchildren is one of the most enjoyable pastimes — watching their first steps or riding a bike for the first time. They have raised their children and cherish the time with their grandchildren without the everyday responsibilities of raising a child.
But what if a relative is unable to care for his or her child, and grandparents suddenly become the parent and not just the grandparent? The Kansas Children’s Service League is hosting monthly support group meetings throughout 2010 to bring together grandparents and other relatives in the Dodge City area who are facing the challenge of raising children.
Meetings are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Dates are: Feb. 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, Aug. 10, Sep. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14.
“Support groups are a wonderful way for caregivers to connect with others who are raising children and to obtain information about community resources that are available,” said B.J. Gore, Parents Helping Parents/parent leadership supervisor for KCSL.
The meetings are free of charge. For more information or to RSVP, contact Ronnie and Becky Klinger at (620) 253-5366.
