True Dodge City values, where are yours?

I realize the actual process of the casino is in true effect of becoming a reality and that my words are probably past due time, but I still have an opinion and concern for our city and our townspeople.

As a family beginning our journey on raising our children in a city we do love, I question all of you where the values are when approving a casino for the sake of tourism or the so-called “pleasure” of gambling, or for those that can justify putting hard-earned money down a machine for a quick thrill.

Many concerns have been brought over time about the safety of our children in the school district or during the summer. Well, for one thing, these children need outlets, and where are they? Where are the activities for the family in gambling? Not mine.

Yes, we have the races during the summer or the pool. (But I am sorry, the pool is way overcrowded. I have a 10-year-old very uncomfortable about going due to the amount of people trying to fit in.) What happened to our water park, which could have been built for indoor/outdoor, giving a fall/winter option for the kids? The Sheridan is a great place to go, but very small. What happened to our water slide? All 4 Fun did a great job of lowering prices to help families this summer, but what about in the winter months? It is not open.
Dodge City needs to place their want for more tourism in family activities. This will bring the tourism we need for our city that is worth a lot and has a lot of potential. If they want to gamble, let them go to Las Vegas, where that is their specialty, not Dodge City, Kansas, with a tremendous amount of heritage.
I question all of you to really consider what this casino has in store for the majority of Dodge City families. Or has this been passed for the benefit for the money-hungry investors? I personally know this is not the environment I want my children to grow up in or be a part of, even if, supposedly, the casino is to include many “goodies” for the family. I know many will say, "Then move." That’s not the option I want. This is where I want to raise my family, but in a family-oriented city.
    Just food for thought.
