A Dodge City man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that he had sexually assaulted an underage female relative on several occasions between July 2006 and March of this year.
Patricio Acevedo, 44, was charged with one count each of rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He was bound over on both counts for a jury trial, which has not been scheduled yet.
The alleged victim, who is now 13, testified that Acevedo had frequently touched her inappropriately over the past two years, and she thought he had molested her on one occasion. She reported the incidents on March 12 after her mother asked if anything was wrong, and her mother later called the police.
When Assistant Ford County Attorney David Belling asked the girl to describe her relationship with Acevedo, she said that they got along well sometimes. But on other occasions, Acevedo yelled at her, she said.
Belling later asked her, "Is what you told the judge today the truth?"
    The girl replied, "Yes."
Belling then asked the girl if she had made up her story to get even with Acevedo, but she said she had not.
Acevedo's attorney, Linda Eckelman, later asked the girl, "Why would your mother ask you about these events on this particular day? Did she see something?"
The girl said that her mother could tell when Acevedo was drunk, and she thought that was the case on March 12. She added that some of the assaults had occurred when Acevedo was drunk, but not all of them.
Eckelman later asked the girl whether Acevedo had molested any of her siblings, but the girl said she did not know of any incidents involving them.
The Globe does not normally publish the names of alleged victims of sexual assault or provide information that could be used to identify them.
