Roads are beginning to drift shut around Dodge City. City officials are also looking at closing down North 14th Avenue between Soule and Comanche Streets.
Electricity is starting to go out in isolated spots around Dodge City. A spokesman for Victory Electric said some places around Dodge City are beginning to lose power, but nothing widespread so far.
"It will all depend on the wind," he said.
Meanwhile, not everyone is wracking their nerves about the weather.
Shane Snook, general manager of the Flying J truck stop, said whenever hard weather hits, he benefits. Starting around 6 a.m., Snook said more and more truckers have been stopping and hunkering down against the snow.
"I love the snow," he said. "It's an increase in business for me."
Businesses across Dodge City have closed today due to the weather, including city and county offices.
Officials are reporting white out conditions around Dodge. If you have no need to be outdoors, avoid travel.
The Dodge City Police Department is on the weather-related accident reporting system as of Friday morning. If you are in a wreck with no injuries, little damage to vehicle and no alcohol involved, exchange names, addresses, telephone numbers and insurance information.
Note the location, date and time of accident and contact the police at a later date.
All roads in southwest Kansas are partly to completely snowpacked, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. There is blowing snow across the region. All travelers should check http://511.ksdot.org or call 511 before traveling.
