  • A Ulysses man who allegedly shot another man last week was charged Monday with shooting at an occupied dwelling.
Ramiro R. Garza Jr. also faces charges of aggravated assault, an aggravated weapons violation and criminal possession of a firearm, according to a news release from Grant County Attorney Robin Hathaway. He is currently being held in the Grant County Detention Center on $200,000 bond.
Garza's preliminary hearing is tentatively set for 9:30 a.m. May 18.
The story began late Wednesday night, when authorities investigated a reported shooting in the 800 block of South Stubbs Street in Ulysses. When they arrived, they found Esequiel Gutierrez suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Gutierrez was transported from the scene by a Grant County EMS crew and later taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he was in fair condition as of Monday.
Garza was arrested the next day in connection with the shooting.
Ulysses Police Chief Alan Olson told the Globe last week that a man and a woman were involved in a confrontation with Gutierrez at a relative's home the night of the shooting, but he declined to comment on what prompted the confrontation.
Neither Hathaway nor Olson returned calls seeking comment on Monday.
