Joe Edward Madden, 83, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009. 
    He was born Nov. 17, 1925, to Harry G. and Myrtis Sims Madden in Stafford and raised in Dodge City. He married Vera Ann Strange in 1949.  She survives.
    He entered the the United States Army in June 1944 and served in Germany in WW II.  He was recalled to the Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War.  Upon returning to Dodge City after the war, he worked for Fairmont Foods and continued in their employ while getting his master’s degree at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.  Upon graduating, he was employed by Safeway Foods and worked for them in California, Oklahoma and Kansas City, where he worked as a supervisor at the ice cream plant.  He had resided in the Kansas City area for the past 50 years.
    He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vera Ann Madden, Blue Springs, Mo.; two sons, David and wife, Cindy Madden, Lee Summit, Mo., Evan Madden, Independence, Mo.; three grandsons and three great-grandsons; a sister, Helen Hall of Wichita; a brother, Jack Madden and wife, Bertie, McPherson; a sister-in-law, Betty Madden Bailey, Dodge City.
    A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 20, in Blue Springs, Mo., and inturnment was at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Mo.  Meyers Funeral Chapel, Blue Springs, Mo., was in charge of the arrangements.
