Spearville High School had no trouble getting by Elkhart and Satanta to earn its third consecutive appearance at the Class 2-1A state softball tournament in Emporia.
“We worked so much harder this year, so we could get the seed we wanted to have the best (chance) to be able to win,” Spearville sophomore pitcher Sarae Kistler said.
In the regional championship on Friday, it took the Lancers five innings to run-rule Satanta, winning 13-0.
The Lancers had a strong showing on the mound as Sarae Kistler threw a one-hitter.
“Sarae has been throwing well,” Spearville head coach Casey Rynerson said. “She did really good again tonight. She kept her composure on the mound, made pitches when she needed to and did not walk a lot of batters.”
On offense, Spearville had five extra-base hits, including triples from Megan Stein, Elle Stein and Tonya Hines.
“The thing I was impressed with, we did not try to pull the ball, we hit the ball where it was pitched,” Rynerson said.
In the last two appearances at state, Spearville was eliminated in the first round.
“(Being there before), definitely helps with the nerves,” Megan Stein said. “After a couple of times, it seems like we have been here before and we can relax a little bit.”
The state tournament starts Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia.
“I am really excited,” Megan Stein said. “We have a really good opportunity to go in there and come out with some hardware.”
During the regional championship, Satanta pitcher Jayce Apsley had a strong start, striking out the side to end the first inning.
In the second inning, Spearville scored three runs and Taylor Offerle had a double.
The Lancers broke the game wide open in the third inning, scoring six runs. With the bases loaded, Megan Stein tripled to clear the bases.         Later in the inning, with two runners on, Tonya Hines doubled to bring them in.
