Today, athletes will compete in the first day of the two-day Class 1A state track and field meet at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

    Ashland High School’s Spencer Amerin, who has cleared six feet, eight inches in the high jump, will compete in the event at 3 p.m. Amerin’s competition is Jerell Nightingale, from Centralia, who has cleared 6-6, and Natoma’s Mason Angel ,who has made a 6-5.

    At the same time, the long-jump competition will be going on, an event Amerin is also competing in.

    At 4:45, Amerin’s teammate Giles Fox will be competing in the discus where he is a No. 3 seed. The two people ahead of him are Greeley County’s Jonathan Miller and Little River’s Colten Viers.

    Two Pawnee Heights guys will also being competing in that event, Nolan Dreiling and Tyler Bailey.
    Dreiling qualified for the state meet in three events, but the discus will be the only event he will take part in on Friday.
    His best event, the javelin takes place on Saturday at 1:15 and he will be throwing the shot put at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
    Bailey will also be taking part in Saturday’s shot put competition.
    Dreiling is also the No. 1 competitor at shot put as he has thrown it 52-8.
    Bailey is fourth with a 48-4 1/2. At No. 2 is Tyler Lambert of Clifton and Greensburg’s Billy Stensland is No. 3.
    Also, Dreiling and Bailey’s teammate Serenity Seiler will be competing in the triple jump at 4:45. Also in that event is Jetmore’s Morgan Edwards.
    South Gray’s Mikayla Skidmore and Bucklin’s Melinda Davis will be battling it out in the pole vault. Both have cleared 9-6, but Weskan’s Jori Mote has cleared 10-0. Skidmore has attempted 10-0 earlier in the year and narrowly missed, hitting the bar with her hand on her way down.
