Three years ago they were told to be a successful band in Dodge City they would have to play covers songs. But local band The Romantz has proved those assumptions wrong.
"We've been together for three years, and the guys we've got together have been together for a solid six months," said lead vocalist Robert Mantz.
Mantz and guitarist, Justin Temaat, bassist, Troy Heard, guitarist, Mike Martin and drummer, Damian Wenrich, have all been involved in Dodge City's music scene for years. This is how they got to know each other's talents, and eventually hook up to form the local metal band.
"You kind of get the best of the best or the people who actually have their heart in it," said Mantz.
It's paid off too because everytime the group hits the stage, the room is packed.
"It's crazy. I never really realized it to a couple of months ago," said Wenrich.
And Mantz said it's not about the money, at all. It's about the music and the rush of a live show.
"You're never going to make money doing it. You know you got your equipment. You got shows. You got flyers. You time you got to put into it," Mantz said. "You know, we don't do it to make money. It's that pay off at the end of the night when one or two people come up at the end of the night and say, 'You guys did really awesome.' That's the payoff."
Catch The Romantz live at 10 p.m. tonight at the Doctor's Office in downtown Dodge City. There is a $5 cover, and it's age 21 and up.
