The Dodge City Community College softball team (5-35) faces its biggest challenge of the season today when they square off against Labette.
The Lady Conquistadors will be facing the No.1 seeded Lady Cardinals in the first round of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference regional playoffs.
Lady Conqs head coach Howie Smith, however, likes his teams chances after studying film of their previous matchup earlier this season in which in they lost to the Lady Cardinals 21-6 and 7-5.
“You know, I really like where our mindset is at,” Smith said. “You know, in that first game against them, we let them have that one big inning, but second game, we were able to battle and keep it close.”
Smith also mentioned that for his club to be successful, they need to keep Lacie Cook off of the bases and not fall behind.
Part of the way that the Lady Conqs plan to do this, is start freshman pitcher Tiffany Flax in game one.
“We’re going to start Tiff in game one and she’s going to have to utilize all four of her pitches,” Smith said.
Dodge will most likely be without Sam Liebhart, home run and RBI leader, who they lost a few weeks ago due to a foot injury in a doubleheader they split against Independence. Smith said she practiced a little in the outfield and could be used if necessary.
“What’s good is, we know how to play and win without Sam,” Smith said.
Smith mentioned that his team practiced Friday for a solid 90 minutes and looked relaxed and ready to go.
“You know, what’s good is the pressure isn’t on us,” Smith said. “I would like it to be a 3-2 ball game in the sixth and have the pressure on Labette. They are the No. 1 seed and we aren’t.”
