An effort to break the world record for the number of people simultaneously eating fire in a public place fell way short, but the organizer hopes to do better next year.

The Wichita Eagle (http://bit.ly/pDBtQa) reports dozens of people who attended the Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff on Saturday agreed to give fire eating a shot in an attempt to top the record of 171.

Dr. Dillinger, a Cowtown interpreter who wants to be known only by his stage name, organized the effort and had contacted Guiness World Records officials in June about the record.

All fire eaters were asked to sign a registry after the event to confirm they had taken part.

The final tally of people who had extinguished miniature burning torches in their mouths showed only 79 participants.
