Carl “Jiggs” Vandine Steinkuehler, 86, died Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Trinity Manor, Dodge City.


     Carl “Jiggs” Vandine Steinkuehler, 86, died Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Trinity Manor, Dodge City.
     He was born April 3, 1925, in Gray County, the son of Charles Frederick and Clara Vandine Steinkuehler.
     He served 23 combined years in the Navy and Army, serving during WWII and attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was an award-winning Mess Sergeant and retired from the Army Reserves in July 1976. He ran cattle for Hy-Plains Dressed Beef in Dodge City from 1967 until his retirement in 1990.  He enjoyed bowling, arts and crafts, reading, gardening, cooking, traveling and Cimarron Blue Jay football.
     On September 28, 1946, he married Viola B. Peterson at Dodge City. She preceded him in death on June 12, 2011.
      Survivors include 7 daughters, Terry Skinner and husband, Jerry, Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Vicki Austin and husband, Jim, Dodge City, Becky Steinkuehler, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lindy Duree and husband, Warren, Dodge City, Kathy K. Konrade and husband, Tom, Dodge City, Sandy Ontiberos and husband, Frank, Dodge City, and Tammy Schweitzer and husband Randy, Ft. Dodge; a brother, Don Steinkuehler, Webster, Texas; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Caleb Steinkuehler; 3 brothers, Wayne, Dean and Earl Steinkuehler; and a sister, Ruth Salem.
     Services will be held at a later date. There will be no public visitation; cremation has taken place.
