The Dodge City Red Demons used a strong second-half performance to dismantle the Hays-TMP Monarchs 6-1 Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium.
Leading the way for DCHS was senior forward Oscar Abelgren, who netted two goals.
The Demons used a highly-aggressive gameplan against the Monarchs, which allowed the squad to dominate time of possession and shots on goal.
Hays drew first blood half way through the first half when Michel Gonzalez took advantage of goalkeeper Alex Rodela, who was playing too far away from the net. Gonzalez floated a ball from midfield perfectly into the twine, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
But that is all the celebrating the visiting time would get to enjoy.
Abelgren notched the score up at one apiece after a lucky bounce caromed off his body and past Hays keeper Drew O'Brien.
Then, with under 10 seconds to play in the first half, senior Oscar Ramirez slid a nicely-placed ball into the goal, sending the Demons into the half with a 2-1 advantage.
Red Demon Head Coach Virgil Hutchcraft said he had to light a fire under his team during halftime, despite controlling most of the game.
"Our energy level really wasn't where it should of been in the first half, so that was something we talked about," he said. "We were playing some lazy ball and not making runs off the ball. So we got after them and told them what to correct."
Dodge City would own most of the second half, barely allowing the Monarchs into their own territory and launching off four more goals. Those getting in on the scoring action include sophomore Isaias De La Torre, senior Vicente Estrella, senior Armando Hipolito, and Abelgren once again.
Next up for the Red Demons are archrival Garden City on Thursday night at 6 pm at Memorial Stadium, a team that is battling for the Western Athletic Conference lead along with Dodge City.
The Demons already own a 5-0 victory over the Buffaloes, but Hutchcraft is preparing for a battle in two days.
"They're going to be tough," Hutchcraft said. "We got them before, but I'm sure they didn't like it. It will definitely be an intense game...We hope to take the intensity out of the game early."
