Shannon Gibbons is battling breast cancer for the second time in six years, and Janette Fulton has survived breast and ovarian cancer.
Gibbons and Fulton are both members of the Jetmore United Methodist Women along with Phyllis Cole and two other women.
Gibbons recently shared her story of fighting cancer with Cole, a friend and neighbor. A few days later, Cole had a vision that showed Gibbons telling her story to a large group of women.
"I haven't really got to see her do that yet," Cole said Friday. "So when our UMW group was needing a program for kind of a women's retreat, I volunteered us to do this."
Gibbons and Fulton will discuss their experiences during a women's retreat, which will run from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Jetmore United Methodist Church, 204 E. Highway. The event will focus on all kinds of cancer and will include testimony from survivors and caregivers, music, videos and lunch.
Participants do not need to register in advance for the event, and there is no charge for admission.
Gibbons said even though cancer isn't funny, her testimony will include some humorous anecdotes about her experience. But her main focus will be on her journey to a deeper faith in God.
"I just really want people to understand that I couldn't have done zero without my faith," she said. "I hope that I can encourage some woman — or even many women — to just turn to God during this awful time."
Fulton said she hasn't started writing her testimony yet, but she is thinking about what she wants to say. She said she will likely combine an inspirational message of survival with practical information about early detection and treatment.
"I think for me, I'm going to emphasize more on being aware of your body in order to get that early diagnosis and how it made a difference for me," she said.
