Merle D. Hitz, 87, died September 26, 2011, at the Minneola District Hospital after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.


     Merle D. Hitz, 87, died September 26, 2011, at the Minneola District Hospital after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
     He was born March 26, 1924, on the family farm near Kingsdown, KS, to John F.G. and Grace Rose (Siefkies) Hitz.
     A lifetime resident of Kingsdown, he was a farmer and stockman, worked for the U.S.D.A. Farm Service Agency and the Ford-Kingsdown Co-op.
     He was a member of the Kingsdown Presbyterian Church and had served as a Trustee.
     On May 24, 1945, he married Beryl Ingalls in Dodge City, KS. They were married for 66 years.
     He leaves to mourn his loss wife, Beryl; son, Michael Hitz and wife, Yvonne, Spearville, and daughter, Gayla Kirmer and husband, Kurt, Spearville, KS; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis; 3 brothers, Glen, Clyde, and Harold; and a sister, Veda Flair.
     While his sons were young, Merle helped start and was a Scout Leader in Kingsdown for Troop 169, taking the local youth on numerous campouts and annual trips to Colorado to the scout ranch.
     Merle was on the USDA/Farm Service committee for 9 years and served on the Victory Electric Cooperative Board of Directors for 14 years.
     Merle and Beryl were very active with the local square dancing club, “Pairs and Squares," for several years with numerous friends in the area until ill health required them to cease dancing.
     Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 29, 2011, at the Kingsdown Presbyterian Church, with Leonard Hitz and Suzie Woods officiating.
     Calling times are from 1 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at Minnis Mortuary, Bucklin, KS. Burial will be in the Bucklin, KS, Cemetery.
