Dodge City Daily Globe - Dodge City, KS
  • Comanche expansion should be four lanes

  • While the Globe applauds the city not wishing to encroach upon current homeowners' property lines, it seems that planning a two-lane roadway for the Comanche expansion will not be using clear foresight.

  • While the Globe applauds the city not wishing to encroach upon current homeowners' property lines, it seems that planning a two-lane roadway for the Comanch expansion will not be using clear foresight.  As the city commission considers plans, the financial aspect indicates the need to act now rather than wait.
Projected costs for a two-lane road are $6 million whereas a four-lane road would cost an estimated $8 million.  If we wait and end up having to add lanes in a few years, how much will the additional lanes cost then?  Two million additional dollars would be better spent now rather than several more millions later.  If we wait to add the lanes, we will likely have more businesses along the roadway.  How much will their business be hurt by traffic stoppage caused by construction?
Because of the density of residential area east of 14th it makes sense to keep that portion of Comanche at two lanes, but moving to the west, we are most certainly looking at an area that will be commercial.  The roadway should support commercial traffic.
We are always comparing ourselves to Garden City and complaining about our losses and their gains.  Perhaps if we look at their foresight and planning we can understand why companies see their town and their roadways as  welcoming commerce and expansion.
If we build it and they come, will they be able to get there when they arrive?
