  • The last time the Dodge City Lady Demon soccer players left the turf at Memorial Stadium, there were tears and heavy hearts after a 6-2 Senior Night loss to Hays. With another opportunity to extend their playing careers on their home field, the Demons weren't going to waste a second chance when it mattered the most.
Behind four goals from sophomore Scarlett Real and two more from senior Hoy Lim, the Demons made easy work of Wichita Southeast on Tuesday night, advancing to the second round of the Regional with a 7-1 ambush.
Despite scoring seven goals and moving onto the next game, head coach Virgil Hutchcraft knows his girls are capable of more as the games begin getting tougher.
"We're just struggling to connect right now, we had a lot of shots that just hit the goalkeeper directly in the hands or went wide from point blank range," he said. "The good thing is that we're learning from our mistakes, but we just have get better at finishing and making wiser decisions."
Dodge City controlled the tempo regularly throughout the contest, allowing very few Buffalo advances to come close to their goal. For the game, the Demons had more than 20 shots, with six of them finding the net via open play and one that was buried home during a penalty kick.
Lim got the game started on the right foot for the Demons, even using her right foot to do it. Just six minutes into the contest, she moved the ball deep into the Southeast penalty area, where her shot from the right side scooted past the reach of the Buffalo goalie, sneaking inside the left post to put Dodge up by one.
Next up was Real, who had multiple chances early on, but finally got one into the net when her shot lasered past the Southeast keeper to double the Demons' lead.
Then with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, freshman Cynthia Rodela found herself on a breakaway down the left chute. The Buffs goalkeeper came out to defend her, where the two collided, but Rodela was able to maneuver the ball past her and knock it into the net.
Up 3-0 at the half, the Demons then had a chance to play with the wind, which was slightly blowing across the field. However, Southeast struck first with their only goal of the game 8 minutes into the second period. A flick from a Buff attacker found its way over the outstretched fingers on Andrea Estrada and into the Demon goal, moving them within two.
But they would watch as Dodge City put their foot on the accelerator.
They answered back at the 27 minute mark, as Lim added her second goal of the game with a brilliant shot from a difficult angle on the left hand side. The shot exploded off her foot and crept underneath the crossbar to push the lead out to 4-1.
Page 2 of 2 -      Then, Real scored the next three goals of the game, all within the final 20 minutes of play. Her second score came after fighting off a defender in the box, pushing the ball past the keeper before behind shoved down.
Her hat trick came when she was awarded a penalty kick after taking a rough tackle in the box, making it despite being forced to attempt it two times. Finally, she wrapped up the scoring a mere minute later, pushing the ball down the right side and firing it through the netminder's hands to send the Demons on to the next round.
"We will probably work a lot on set plays, some on finishing, but with the quick turnaround, we won't go all out," Hutchcraft said. "We have to save their legs some, but we're not going to take the day completely off."
Now the Demons will wait to see if they play Derby or Wichita Northwest at Memorial Stadium on Thursday at 6 p.m. Dodge City played Northwest during their second game of the season, losing to them 1-0. That is when the Demons shifted their whole formation mentality and have since excelled on the pitch.
Their first round win marks the first time the Lady Demons have won a first round Regional game in nearly eight years, a mark they will look to continue pushing behind them with Thursday night's second round clash.
