  •      Ford County Fire and EMS has determined that a discarded cigarette started the fire near Wright over the weekend. The fire occurred on US 400 near mile marker 131, about seven miles east of Dodge.
Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire,  and there was no structural damage but there was a lot of damage to land in the area according to deputy chief Rob Boyd.
"We did have to evacuate one family from their home, but they were able to return a few hours later," said Boyd. "There was a lot of damage to fence posts, power lines, standing wheat and surrounding crop lands though."
The fire, which was bigger than the one a few weeks ago that happened near Fort Dodge, took six and a half hours to extinguish with the help of many other local fire departments including; the Dodge City Fire Department, Minneola, Mead/Flowler and Hodgeman County, as well as the Sheriff's office and the Salvation Army.
"We also had a lot of farmers in the area who came out with their tractors and helped disk the ground in front of the fire to try and stop it," said Boyd, "I'm so grateful for their help."
Weather conditions that day made the fire even more challenging, according to Boyd there were high winds, low humidity and the land was so dry, the fire moved quickly, and it was hard to get ahead of it to contain it and put it out.
"I would just like to remind people, especially with all the dry weather we have been having recently, and even in the past few years to be extremely careful with any open flames including cigarettes," said Boyd. "It's easy for these things to get out of control."
