  •      Longtime Jetmore resident and mass communications professor at Dodge City Community College, John Ewy has filed to run for the 117th House District as a Republican candidate. Ewy says that although he has never held an elected position in government before he is excited for this new venture.
“I've thought about running many times before,” said Ewy, “it just never really seemed like the right thing to do at the time.”
So, what changed? When the Kansas voting districts were re-organized earlier this year and the 117th district was reconfigured to include parts of Pawnee, Hodgeman, Kiowa, Edwards, Ford and Ness counties Ewy realized that he knew a lot of people in all those areas. People he respected and trusted. And he felt that he could represent them, and the rest of Southwest Kansas they way they should be.
“You can't know everything about everything,” said Ewy, “so when I'm dealing with an issue in the House that I don't know a lot about, I know I have a friend, family member or former student who is an expert on that issue, and I can call them up and learn from them about what is going on.”
If elected Ewy said that he would focus on what he feels many Southwest Kansans care about; jobs, energy, agriculture and family. He would be a voice for the people of Southwest Kansas, and give them the respect they deserve.
“I am 100 percent pro family,” said Ewy, “and that weighs heavily on many of the decisions I make now, and will have to make in the future.”
Although some may see Ewy as inexperienced in government, he feels that the life experiences he has had make him just as qualified as any other candidate.
“I like to say; 'Every politician had to start somewhere. They all had to have that first election.' This is mine.”
