  • The 4th Saturday in July is the National Day of the Cowboy. Cowboy themed coloring pages are being distributed to children at various attractions and the Visitors Center in Dodge City. Flags have been presented to the City, County, Roundup Rodeo and Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City for flying to recognize this date.
Since its inception in 2005, the City of Dodge City has approved a proclamation for
this designation. At the state level, a proclamation was presented and signed by the
    Governor.
The mission of the National Day of the Cowboy nonprofit organization is to contribute to the preservation of America's Cowboy heritage so that the history and culture which the United States Congress's National Day of the Cowboy resolution honors, can be shared and perpetuated for the public good, through education, the arts, celebrations, gatherings, rodeos, and community activities. July 28, 2012 is the 8th annual National Day of the Cowboy.
Another of our key projects begun in 2005, was the creation of a National Day of
the Cowboy flag, a symbol intended to bring awareness to all that the Cowboys and
Cowgirls contribute to our pioneer preservation. The flag now flies in twenty-four
states and four countries. In 2008, the National Day of the Cowboy flag traveled five million seven hundred thousand miles to the International Space Station and back, board the Discovery Space Shuttle, with NASA Commander, Mark Kelly. This historic event,  taking the old frontier into the new frontier, was noted in the Washington Post, a newspaper not typically associated with stories about our Cowboy heritage. In addition, the flag flies with our troops, the Desert Cowboys, in Iraq and Afghanistan.
