  • Dad bound for first degree murder, child abuse charges

  • No bond was set yesterday morning for murder and child abuse suspect Jonathan M. Villa-Ramirez, 24, of Dodge City. During the hearing, a charge of felony murder in the first degree was added to his previous charge of child abuse.
    According to Deputy Ford County Attorney David Belling, the charge of first degree felony murder alleges the killing occurred during the commission of another felony crime. For Villa-Ramirez, the crime of child abuse.
    Villa-Ramirez's 9-month-old son Brandon was taken to Western Plains Medical Complex July 22 with critical injuries and later airlifted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Ford County Attorney Terry Malone said the infant was kept alive on a ventilator while in the hospital.
    The Dodge City Police Department was notified of Brandon's death at 1 a.m. Thursday, according to a DCPD press release.
    Villa-Ramirez was arrested July 25 in Texas County, Okla. by the Texas County Sheriff's Department. The Dodge City Police Department notified law enforcement in surrounding states to look for Villa-Ramirez's vehicle when the child abuse warrant was issued.
    Ford County records show Villa-Ramirez was on bond for a pending case of aggravated robbery and three other charges, according to Belling. The other charges Belling spoke of are attempted aggravated robbery, attempted robbery and aggravated assault. He posted a $75,000 bond March 21, 2011 for the crimes with alleged occured in Ford County March 2, 2011. A July 18 hearing for the pending charges was continued and is now set for Aug. 2 when a motion filed by prosecutors requesting his bond be revoked will be addressed.
    Villa-Ramirez's preliminary hearing on the alleged murder and child abuse is scheduled for Aug. 9 at 1 p.m.
