The city of Dodge City is in the process of gradually replacing older street signs and they're putting them up for sale.
Each sign is numbered and includes an authentication label. Certificates of authenticity are also in the works.
"We knew people would be interested in the heritage names, like Longbranch, Wyatt Earp Blvd. and Gunsmoke," Melissa McCoy, project development coordinator for the city, said in a phone interview Wednesday. "We also thought people might like to have a street sign from the street they grew up on or where their grandparents lived — some location that was special to them."
Only about 30 of the retired signs are available now, but others will become available as crews install newer signs.
"Funds raised by the sale of the signs will go toward improvements in the wayfinding signage around town," McCoy said.
According to McCoy, several area businesses have expressed interest in obtaining the signs to use in their stores.
Signs can be purchased at the visitor center located at Wyatt Earp Blvd. and Third Avenue.
The center is open 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily during the summer.
For more information, call the visitor center at (620) 227-8186.
