Fall might have only just begun, but the Stauth Museum in Montezuma is already getting ready for Christmas. Their bi-annual "Christmas in Southwest Kansas" show is taking reservations for exhibit space now.
"I like to have this show early," said Kim Legleiter, executive director of the museum. "This way everyone isn't bogged down with all the Christmas adds and store displays. Plus people will be able to get their decorations back in time to decorate their own homes."
Every other year for the past 15 years the Stauth Museum has taken donations from local community members to make this display possible. Any individual, group or business may register for a space in the museum, and then decorate it with their theme. All the items will be given back to the owners at the end of the show.
"We have had some great themes before," said Legleiter. "In the past we've had a NASCAR Christmas, a snowman theme, a German Christmas, a John Deere Christmas, Christmas Collectibles and many more."
The museum has room for about 18 different exhibits, depending on how much space each display requires, so Legleiter recommends signing up as soon as possible. The spaces will be given away on a first to notify basis, meaning that the first people to call and say they want a space will be given one. Several businesses have already reserved their space including Just For You, Clark Pharmacy, the Montezuma Library (which will be working with their children's groups to create their display) and the Blue Light Women's Organization.
"Sometimes people are hesitant to sign up because they feel that their collection is too small, or they don't know how to display it," said Legleiter. "But that's what me and my staff are here to do. Take your items and make them look good!"
Christmas on Southwest Kansas will run from Sunday, Oct. 21 through Monday Nov. 26. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday 9-12 and 1-4:30, Sunday 1:30-4:30. Closed Mondays and all major holidays.
"The Christmas exhibit is always a fun way to get in the Christmas spirit before the stores make it too stressful," said Legleiter, "and it's also a great place to get ideas for how to decorate your home for the holidays."
