4-H is holding their annual flea market today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ford County Fair Building located at 901 W. Park Street.
"We have a flea market twice a year," said Molly Trausch, the 4-H youth development extension agent. "It's a great project and fundraiser for the program."
Each year 4-H extension rents booths to community members to sell their unwanted items, extension will have their own booths as well.
"Everyone gets to keep the money they make from the things they sell, but extension keeps the money from the rental," said Trausch. "We also keep the money from concessions available during the flea market, and the money the extension booth makes as well."
All the money raised from the flea market will be used to finance travel expenses for the 4-H exchange group program. Every other year 4-H members between the ages of 14 and 18 have the opportunity to travel to a different state and learn a new way of living. Then, the next year, 4-H'ers from that state come to Dodge City and learn about life here. This summer the group traveled by Amtrack to Wisconsin.
"The kids had a blast traveling by train, going to museums, meeting new people and learning new things," said Trausch. "And next year, we will host 4-H'ers from Wisconsin and show them around Dodge City."
Trausch is expecting at least 50 tables of items to be sold, from about 15 different vendors.
"The whole building will be full of stuff," she said. "It will be packed in there."
Some of the items for sale include lots of furniture including kitchen tables and chairs, men's women's and children's clothes, holiday decorations, tools, toys jewelry, electronics and more.
"This is a really fun way to raise money for our exchange program," said Trausch, "and every year it's a huge success for everyone who takes part in it."
