The Dodge City Lady Demons seem to have started their final push towards the Class 6A state tournament after claiming the title Saturday in the Scott City Invitational.
The Lady Demons went 4-1 on the day, including avenging their only loss of the meet by beating Holcomb in the championship match in three games (25-21, 16-25, 25-12).
Dodge City has won seven of its last eight matches with the showing in Scott City and in a quadrangular in Garden City. These are the last matches before the Western Athletic Conference matches in Liberal.
"We are putting it all together at the perfect time in our season," said DCHS volleyball coach Krystle Gaswick. "Coming off Thursday night's performance the girls didn't back down at all. I am happy for our seniors that we were able to take home gold, and for the entire team accomplishing tournament champions together. We are looking forward to taking this momentum to WAC next Saturday in Liberal."
The Lady Demons (15-16) beat Thomas Moire Prep (25-13, 25-13) and Wichita County (25-11, 25-14) before losing to Holcomb (25-18, 22-25, 26-24). Dodge City beat the host Beavers in the semifinals (26-28, 25-17, 25-22) to set up the final match with the rematch of the Lady Longhorns.
Ciera Lampe recorded 44 kills for the tournament, while Summer Wilson and Chandra Sain had seven blocks, Breckyne Pike served eight aces and Alexis Sanchez with 52 assists.
The Lady Demons put a damper on Garden City's "Senior Night" two days earlier, beating the Lady Buffaloes in three games (25-15, 12-25, 25-23). Dodge City also beat Scott City in three games (25-17, 23-25, 25-21) and Ulysses (25-15, 25-20).
"We have been working on consistency and creating our own energy; the girls finally put it all together for the entire night," Gaswick said. "We had numerous players step up and do some big things for us."
Lampe and Sanchez recorded 17 kills in the quadrangular, while Sain recorded eight blocks, and Katrina Roenfeldt recorded 23 assists.
