  • Mavericks beat Spearville to win league tournament

  • The host Kiowa County Mavericks didn't lose a game Saturday in claiming the Southern Plains-Iroquois Activities Association volleyball tournament.
    The Mavericks went 5-0 on the day, beating Spearville (25-19, 25-15) in the final to claim the championship. Kiowa County also beat South Gray (25-12, 25-5), Ashland (25-4, 25-14) and Bucklin (25-19, 25-15) to win their pool and then beat Ingalls (25-15, 25-15) in the
    semifinals.
    Ingalls beat Bucklin in three games (14-25, 25-13, 25-18) to claim third place in the tournament.
    Spearville won their bracket after beating Hodgeman County (25-14, 25-21), Fowler (25-22, 25-13) and Ingalls (25-13, 25-22). Spearville beat Bucklin (25-20, 25-21) in the semifinals to play for the title.
    Other games in the Kiowa County pool included Bucklin over Ashland (25-15, 25-19) and South Gray (25-15, 25-12) and Ashland beating South Gray (14-25, 27-25, 25-19).
    Other games in the Spearville pool included Ingalls over Fowler (21-25, 25-19, 25-11) and Hodgeman County (25-12, 26-24) and Hodgeman County over Fowler (25-20, 25-21).
    Play-in games saw Fowler beat Minneola (25-17, 25-13), Hodgeman County over South Central (25-14, 27-25) and South Gray over Pawnee Heights (25-16, 25-17). South Central won both games in consolation play over Minneola (25-16, 25-20) and Pawnee Heights (25-21, 25-19) and Pawnee
    Heights won the other consolation game over Minneola (25-11, 25-9).
