  • The Dodge City High boys soccer team started strong in their Western Athletic Conference matchup against the Great Bend Panthers, but their lack of consistency did the Demons in again during a 2-0 setback Tuesday at Memorial Stadium.
The Red Demons (5-7-1, 2-4-1) had good attack early in both halves, but the Panthers found a way to slip past the Dodge City defense for both goals in the game.
"It's tough because they are working hard and are motivated, but we just have some mental lapses that have gotten us," said DCHS soccer head coach Charles Johnson. "We have tried to break them of that and they have been getting better, but it's a consistency issue.
"When we put things together, then we look like a different team. I'm proud of my guys for the effort they put in, but they just need to be more consistent."
Great Bend took the lead in the 20th minute when Alex Rios scored from 20 yards away.
"I thought we had the majority of the momentum in the first half, but we made the mistake and they beat us," Johnson said.
The Panthers (9-4, 3-4) got their second goal from 15 yards away from Javier Guerra in the 55th minute to seal the league victory.
Dodge City's next game is Thursday against the Wichita Trinity Academy Knights. The varsity game is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
