The Dodge City High School boys cross country team claimed their second consecutive Western Athletic Conference title with five runners finish in the top 11 to dominate the race at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.
The Lady Demons squad finished third in their league meet as Garden City also repeated as league champion.
It was the sixth meet won by the Red Demons, who haven't finished lower than third in any meet and hadn't been beaten by any other Class 6A squad so far this season. The Red Demons scored 33 points as a team, with Liberal finishing second with 61 and Garden City 67. Great Bend (91) and Hays (105) round out the team standings.
Oscar Carmona was named Western Athletic Conference runner of the year and solidified that with his league title run in a time of 16:56.8.
Younger brother Luis Carmona placed fourth in the meet with a time of 17:24.1. Layne Moe (seventh, 17:30.1), Elder Colindres (10th, 18:05.0) and Edward Rivera (11th, 18:06.7) also scored for the Red Demons. Carmona was named to the first team all-league, while Moe and Colindres were honorable mention selections by the league.
Other times for the Demons include Jonathan Rendon (17th, 18:26.5) and Eric Snyder (28th, 19:12.1).
The Lady Demons scored 81 points as a team in their meet with Jasmine Duarte leading the team in a time of 17:40.1 (11th place). Lucero Botello finished 13th (17:54.7), while Nallely Hernandez (17th, 18:27.2), Jennifer Guox (19th, 18:31.6), Perla Neave (21st, 18:43.5) and Suhei Calderon (22nd, 18:43.6) rounded out the scores.
Garden City won the meet with 19 points with the Lady Buffaloes placing four of the top five individuals in the race: Alex Miller (league champion, 16:01.3), Kayla Doll (second, 16:11.7), Chelsea Jackson (third, 16:19.0) and Katy Doll (fifth, 17:05.7).
Great Bend finished second in the meet with 67 points, followed by the Lady Demons, Liberal (84) and Hays (113).
The Demons' next competition is the Class 6A regional meet to be raced at Wichita's Cessna Activity Center. The girls meet will start at 1 p.m., followed by the boys race at 1:30 p.m. Other teams in the regional besides Dodge City will include Garden City, Derby, Campus, Wichita East, Wichita Northwest, Wichita South and Wichita Southeast. The top three teams in each regional qualify for the state meet at Lawrence's Rim Rock Farm on Oct. 28.
