  • It felt like any other day for Dodge City High forward Isaac Palma until he stepped onto the pitch before Thursday's game against the Wichita Trinity Knights.
The sophomore forward had taken some words to heart from DCHS coach Charles Johnson about finishing scoring chances and wanted to help the team improve and show they were a better team than their records showed.
Palma recorded a hat trick before halftime and finished with five goals by the end of the match as the Red Demons burned the Knights 6-2.
"We were executing our passing and finding the open player," Palma said. "That's how we're supposed to play."
Johnson also said that Palma was the beneficiary of a team playing as well as capable when they followed their game plan.
"Isaac gets the credit and the team helped him out," Johnson said. "It's a matter of relying on each other. The guys worked their butts off and this is a result of all the hard work they put in."
Palma scored his first goal for Dodge City (6-7-1) in the 16th minute after Preston Miller of Trinity scored the opening tally six minutes earlier. Palma's second goal came in the 38th minute as the Red Demons passed the ball to the open man from one side of the field to the other and the sophomore scored from 15 yards; and his third goal came with 10 seconds left before intermission when he streaked past the Knights' defense and received a pass from Leonel Lopes.
The first goal for Palma after intermission came in the 55th on a free kick, and the final goal scored by the sophomore cane in the 73rd minute. Dodge City's other goal came in the 66th minute by Stephan Bohling in front of the goal after receiving a pass from Mario Lopez.
Ryan Miller scored the final goal of the game for Trinity in the 74th minute.
Dodge City hosts Wichita Heights in a Saturday affair at Memorial Stadium. The kickoff of the varsity game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
