The Dodge City Conquistadors volleyball team played an even game Wednesday night against the Barton Cougars in a Jayhawk West showdown at the DCCC Gymnasium.
Even except in making more errors as the Conqs lost to the Cougars in four games (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 28-26).
It was the type of game where a few points the other way could have been the difference between winning and losing.
"At the end of the night, they had less errors than we did," said DCCC head coach Stephano Anthemides. "It was an exciting match, but not a pretty one. We couldn't stop their middle (blockers), but they couldn't stop ours. I thought we had the better swings, but when we have some basic plays that we do not execute and put the ball like we need to, then it comes back to haunt us."
Alyse Barclay had eight kills, five blocks and 31 assists to lead the Lady Conqs (10-19, 2-9), while Victoria Cross recorded 15 kills and Chantel Birbaum 11 kills for Dodge City.
The first game of the match stayed pretty close to the end before Barton (10-13, 8-3) closed it out by scoring four of the last five points to take the early lead in the match. The Cougars kept Dodge City from making strings of points in the second game (the Lady Conqs got only four points on serve) and slowly pushed away to win the game, leading 2-0 in the match.
Dodge City held an early lead in the third game, but Barton was able to battle back and tie the score at 18-18. The Lady Conqs scored seven of the last nine points to earn the game and cut the match margin down to 2-1.
The fourth game went back and forth with Dodge City getting a game point situation that could have evened the match, but errors allowed Barton to win the match on their second chance.
The Lady Conqs are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Colby and face the Lady Trojans. Dodge City's final home game will be against Garden City on Oct. 23.
