The Dodge City Conquistadors men's soccer team should have been a happy group of players leaving Memorial Stadium after beating the Kansas City (Kan.) Blue Devils 5-3 to end a three-game losing streak.
The Conqs, instead, a chewing from DCCC head coach Tim Romanello for their lackluster play in the second half as the Blue Devils almost made up a five-goal halftime deficit.
"I was proud of them in the first half. It was brilliant and showed what we're capable of doing because they creating the moments," Romanello said. "The second half was one of the worst performances that I remember.
"I don't know why we change the way we play. It's always the last thing you did on the field that you remember and we have to go play at Allen County this weekend and this is our last performance."
Forward Manny Mondestin scored two goals and added an assist in the game for the Conqs (9-7, 4-4). Mondestin scored in the eighth and 38th minutes of the game, and assisted on the 18th-minute goal by Jose Munoz. The Conqs' other goals came on an own goal against the KCK defense in the 27th minute and by Emiliano Gross off an assist by Samuel Sanchez in the 32nd minute.
Rigo Sandoval recorded four saves for the Conqs in the victory.
The Blue Devils (5-6-2, 3-3-1) scored goals in the 49th (Edwin Lopez), 78th (Zak Hargroves) and 85th minutes (Erick Marcia).
Lady Conqs shut out KCK 6-0
The Lady Conqs scored three goals in both halves for their second victory in a row at Memorial Stadium.
The team shuffled their formation from a 4 defender-4 midfielder-2 forward set to a 3-5-2 attack that gave Dodge City a better command of the midfield.
Sam Cypert got the Lady Conqs (7-10, 4-6) after scoring in the second minute of the game, with Laura Axe adding a goal in the 23rd and Rosie Botello scoring in the 41st minutes to complete the first half summary.
Amanda Carney scored goals in the 49th and 77th minutes to lead the Dodge City charge in the second half, while Araceli Osorio also had a goal in the 63rd minutes.
Alyssa Landon had two saves in goal for the Lady Conqs in the win.
"They were fantastic," Romanello said about the Lady Conqs. "We played with a lot less stress and enjoyed playing. That's what it's all about is to enjoy the game. They came out of the locker room after halftime and they weren't satisfied (with just playing hard the first half)."
The Lady Devils are now 2-11 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
