LAKIN -- The Cimarron Bluejays continue to show it's not the size of the fighters, but the fight in each player that keep them winning as the season progresses.
The Bluejays again demonstrated their success with a 20-17 victory over the Lakin Broncs and find themselves on the doorsteps of what would have been at the beginning of the season an improbable playoff berth.
Cimarron (6-1, 1-0 Class 3A-District 16) took the lead early in the final stanza on a when a short pass from A.J. Cooper to Josh Meis turned into a 67-yard touchdown reception.
The Bluejays kept the game from going into overtime after blocking a 42-yard field goal late in the contest to seal the victory.
Cooper finished 7-of-14 for 167 yards and the one touchdown pass, while Meis caught four passes for 140 yards. Clark led the Cimarron rushing attack with 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Cimarron will host Southwestern Heights in a district matchup Friday night. A Cimarron win and a victory by Holcomb over Lakin would assure Cimarron's trip to the postseason. Holcomb beat the Mustangs 48-14 in the other district game.
Spearville 64, Satanta 14
SATANTA — The Spearville Royal Lancers stayed on track in the Eight-Man Division I-District 7 with a 64-14 rout on the road over the Indians. The game was called at halftime for the 45-point rule.
Spearville scored 32 points in both stanzas before halftime to improve to 4-3 overall and a three-way tie for the second playoff spot in the district with a 2-1 record.
Brandon Davis scored three touchdowns -- two on rushing touchdowns and the final on a 30-yard interception return -- and threw for another to Nathan Stein. Stein finished with three touchdowns as well with two rushing scores to go with his scoring catch.
Brady Sherraden also scored two rushing touchdowns for Spearville in the victory.
Jesus Garcia ran for one touchdown and threw for another to Kyle Abernathy to lead Satanta (2-5, 0-3).
Hodgeman Co. 48, Minneola 30
JETMORE -- The Longhorns scored 14 points in the second, third and fourth stanza to knock the Wildcats out of the ranks of the unbeaten ranks in a battle for the top spot in the Eight-Man Division I-District 7 standings.
The Longhorns are now 5-2 overall and unbeaten in three games. Minneola falls to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league action.
South Gray beat Deerfield 66-20 in the third district game. South Gray is also 4-3 overall and 2-1 in district play, while Deerfield is still winless after six games.
Friday's upcoming district games include Hodgeman County hosting Deerfield, Minneola at Satanta, and South Gray at Spearville.
Kiowa Co. 50, Fairfield 36
LANGDON -- The Mavericks moved into second place in the Eight-Man I-District 6 standings with the road victory over the Falcons.
Page 2 of 2 - The Mavericks gained 463 rushing yards on the Falcons in the victory. Trever Powell ran for 159 yards and two scores, Creighton McDonald gained 173 yards and one score, and Keenan Behee gained 131 yards and two scores for Kiowa County (5-2, 4-1). McDonald also a touchdown pass to Powell.
The Mavericks host Attica in a non-league game on Friday, then host St. John with the possibility of winning the district or being eliminated from the playoff picture.
Fowler 47, Bucklin 0
FOWLER -- The Goldbugs scored 41 points in the opening stanza on the way to recording the 45-point mercy rule victory over the Red Aces to remain on top of the Eight-Man II-District 8 standings.
Tem Shetley ran for 123 yards and five touchdowns and also had an interception, while Luke Huelskamp also ran for a score and Ty Clark returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the victory for Fowler (6-1, 3-0). Bucklin remains winless on the season after seven games, including three district matchups.
Moscow 42, Ashland 6
MOSCOW -- The Wildcats (5-2, 2-1) remain a game behind the Goldbugs for the lead in the Eight-Man II-District 8 standings as Brock Brazeal scored two rushing touchdowns and caught two scoring passes from Lane Miller.
Miller also ran for a touchdown for Moscow, as did Alexis Manriquez.
Ashland's only score was a five-yard run by Kole Konrade. The Bluejays are 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Rolla beat Ingalls 40-36 in the other district matchup. Rolla is also 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the league, while Ingalls falls to 3-4 and 1-2 in district play.
Friday's upcoming district games will include Fowler at Moscow, Ingalls at Ashland, and Rolla at Bucklin.
Meade 61, Wichita Co. 14
LEOTI -- The Buffaloes scored 49 first half points on the way to beating the Indians in a non-league matchup. Meade outscored Wichita County 28-6 in the first quarter and scored 21 unanswered points in the second to solidify the rout.
Jett Little and Trevin Wiens each scored two rushing touchdowns for the Buffaloes (6-1), while Chris Hardaway and Chayse Ross also scored on the ground. Hardaway also had touchdown passes to Randy Friesen and Morgan Davis in the victory.
