  • It wasn't a pleasant way the Dodge City Red Demons soccer team left the field for the final time this season as a rabid rush of a rally in the final 20 minutes fell short in a 2-1 loss to Liberal.
Rene Yeverino got the Red Demons on the board in the 73rd minute, but the home squad couldn't get another attack through for the equalizer.
"We didn't look like ourselves the first 20 minutes of the second half," said DCHS head coach Charles Johnson. "We just put the ball in the air a little bit too much; but once we came around, we started clicking. It was just a matter of getting chances and not finishing on them.
"This is one that got away from us and we should have taken care of it. We'll learn from it, though."
The Red Demons (7-8-1, 2-5-1 WAC) trailed 2-0 at halftime on goals by Samuel Cruz in the 15th and Esteban Michel in the 35th minute as the defending Class 5A state champion Redskins (7-7-1, 2-5) got revenge from a loss to Dodge City earlier in the year.
"It's tough to play into the wind and they took advantage of it, so you have to give them credit for that, but I really thought we dominated them the first half," Johnson said. "Their goalie (Saul Delgado) did a nice job of keeping them in there in the first half and keeping us off the score sheet."
The Red Demons now wait to see this afternoon where they will travel in the first round of the Class 6A South Central bracket. The DCHS athletic administration felt before seedings came out that the Demons would play either at Wichita Northwest or Derby, but that it would be played Tuesday.
"Look at the whole season and our guys never quit," Johnson said. "They always work hard to the very end. We think there's a lot of parody in the regional and I think anybody can beat anybody in this regional. We just have to go out and do what we know we can do, and great things can happen."
