The Dodge City Conquistadors soccer team played to their opponent's tempo in the first half of their Region VI first round contest against the Pratt Beavers.
With a little bit more urgency in the second half, the Conquistadors scored a goal in the 60th minute and then held off a frantic attack by the Beavers to win the game 1-0 and head on to Topeka this weekend for the remainder of the tournament.
It was the first-ever region victory for the Conqs (12-7), and also continued to raise the new record for wins in a season.
"They deserve every piece and every accomplishment they've made this year," said DCCC soccer coach Tim Romanello.
German Aguirre scored the only goal of the contest after receiving a pass from Larry Martinez. The play capped off a new resolve the Conqs had coming out of the locker room from their first half play.
"It was a very big win," Romanello said. "Pratt played very organized in the midfield and their wings. We also allowed them to slow the game down a little bit. When we play quick and we play fast, then we're a completely different unit.
"We did come out with a little bit of authority in the second half and we decided to press. Once we decided to do that, we really went after it and got things done."
Romanello said the Beavers did panic after the goal, but Dodge City's Rigo Sandoval kept the ball out of the net to preserve the victory. Sandoval had four saves in the victory.
Pratt finishes the season at 10-7. It was the second 1-0 loss at Dodge City in a week.
The Conqs will battle top-seeded Barton (14-2-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Topeka's Hummer Sports Park.
