Dodge City takes advantage of Indians' miscues to advance in playoffs
The Dodge City Red Demons made it to the Class 6A football playoffs by one point.The Red Demons made it a point to the Manhattan Indians that they had no plans to go quietly in the night and be satisfied with just an extra game.Parker Davis ran for over 200 yards and the DCHS defense didn't allow the Indians into the red zone until late in the fourth quarter on the way to a 38-6 road victory.Davis earned 191 of his 203 yards before intermission as the Demons (5-5) took advantage of six Manhattan turnovers on the night.The Indians was able to move the ball before the DCHS defense stiffened as Manhattan got closer to the goal line.Kelan Newton didn't have the best night throwing the ball, but he did throw three touchdowns: a 46-yard pass to Jordan Doan in the second quarter, a 25-yard score to Blaik Middleton on the first play of the fourth quarter, and an 85-yard pass to Taylor Murphy late in the final stanza.The Demons couldn't take advantage of a good opening drive or on either of the first two fumbles given up by Manhattan (6-4) with a missed field goal and two punts.Dodge City got another drive started on the Indians' third fumble with Davis putting the Demons on the board with a 28-yard run for a touchdown.The Demons scored a minute later after recovering an on-side kick. Newton scrambled around before finding Doan all alone behind the Indian secondary to make the score 14-0.Parker scored his second touchdown of the stanza just before halftime with a 16-yard run to push Dodge City ahead 21-0 going into the locker room.The Indians fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, but Dodge City couldn't take advantage. The Demons did take advantage of an interception by Justin Gemaelich with a 45-yard field goal by Dillon Burkhart to make the score 24-0.Newton's touchdown passes in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring for Dodge City, while Manhattan scored with less than two minutes remaining on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Holloway to Devin Cossman.The Red Demons will host Derby in a sectional contest next Friday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
