  • Republican Chris Boys unofficially earned the title of District 2 Ford County Commissioner in Tuesday's election.
Boys' Democrat opponent Rebecca Escalante brought in an impressive number of votes, despite the presence of write-in candidate Mike Burkhart. Escalante received approximately 27 percent of the unofficial vote total. Burkhart got just 8 percent.
At the end of the day Boys brought in roughly 65 percent of the Ford County votes, a number he credits to a fun, fair race.
Boys described his campaign against Escalante as one with no mudslinging with candidates who respectfully stood their ground against one another.
Escalante seconded Boys' thoughts and extended her congratulations to Boys. She said she plans to make a difference in the community, even though she will not be commissioner.
Boys on the other hand, has already started making plans for the commission including the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program which begins tomorrow. The goal of the program is to promote safety in Ford County.
He said  he is  concerned with the cutbacks coming to Ford County from Topeka but said the commission will address the cuts as a learning curve on how to deal with shortfalls on a tight budget.
