Hometown player Buckner records double-double
The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors picked up their defensive effort Tuesday night in recording a 73-41 rout of Northwest Tech in action at United Wireless Arena.
Freshman post Samantha Herrera scored 15 of her game high 19 points in the first half to lead the offense, while freshman guard Kesha Buckner made all six of her baskets and four free throws to score 16 points in the victory. Buckner, the former Dodge City High star, also had 10 rebounds to record her first collegiate double-double.
"We're going to have to have different people step up every night and tonight, it was Samantha and Kesha," said Dodge City head coach Lucas McDonald. "We don't have anybody who can be the leader every night, so we have to rely on someone coming up big and it's not going to be the same people."
The Lady Conqs' defense allowed only six Lady Maverick points after 11 minutes of play. Northwest Tech was 7-of-29 from the field before intermission. Northwest Tech was 16-of-62 from the field (2-of-13 from 3-point range) in the game in losing their third game to open the season.
It was the defensive effort that McDonald said had gone away from the team in their loss three days earlier to Lamar.
"We played a lot stronger on defense tonight, especially in the first half," McDonald said. "We kind of got a little sloppy in the second half when we were looking at the score. We talked about that we have to maintain our focus on the floor."
Dodge City (2-1) shot 15-of-28 in the first half and led 37-18 at halftime. Buckner, Kelli Tolar and Casey McCauley scored six points apiece in adding to Herrera's play before intermission.
The Lady Conqs continued to dominate the game in the second half, scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the stanza. Dodge City's biggest lead in the second half was 34 points (69-35).
McCauley added eight points and grabbed six rebounds in the victory for Dodge City.
The Lady Conqs' next game is Friday afternoon against Frank Phillips (Texas) in the Garden City Pepsi Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Dodge City will also play Howard College (Texas) in action Saturday afternoon in Garden City.
