  • The Allen County Lady Devils decided they didn't want to try to penetrate the Dodge City Lady Conquistadors' defense in their game Friday night at the United Wireless Arena.
The Lady Devils just decided to shoot over it in the first half to build a big lead and then fought back after a frantic second half rally to beat Dodge City 80-74 in the Lady Conq Classic.
Nineteen of Allen County's 27 field goals were from beyond 3-point range. The Red Devils (3-2) actually shot better from beyond the arch (46.3 percent) than they did from two-point range (37 percent).
"They have had the ability to shoot like that, but they hadn't shot it well until tonight," said Dodge City head coach Lucas McDonald. "I knew they had better shooters and tonight, they just shot right over us. There were some threes that we were contesting they still made."
The Lady Conqs (2-4) took control of the game at the start of the second half.Kayla Toler was the catalyst for Dodge City in the comeback, scoring 19 points as the Lady Conqs whittled the 20-point lead all the way to a 69-69 tie with 5:24 remaining in regulation.
Allen County came back with two 3-pointers during an 8-0 run to push the Lady Devils back into the lead for good.
"I'm proud of my kids about the way they came back," McDonald said. "They battled back and tied it up. We never took the lead but we battled at the rim. We just have to find a way to finish up. We've lost three close games and all of them it's come down to finishing up and we haven't executed as well as we needed."
As for Toler, McDonald said: "She hit some really big shots for us and that's why she's here. She showed the ability to knock down those shots. She has some things she needs to improve on, but she's one who has the ability to make big shots."
Allen County made 14 of their 23 3-point shots in the first half with DaNara Day hitting five of her seven attempts from long range and Ebonie Jones knocking down all four from beyond the arc. Day scored 17 before intermission and Jones added 14 as the Lady Devils led 52-32 at halftime.
The Devils also helped themselves by forcing the Dodge City offense to misfire for a seven-minute stretch in the opening stanza. The Lady Conqs led 10-5 after four minutes of play before Allen outscored Dodge City 31-5 to build its biggest lead midway through the period.
Toler led Dodge City in scoring with 24 points, while Jameeshia Armstrong added 15, Samantha Herrera 13 and Casey McCauley 10. Kesha Buckner had 12 rebounds to lead Dodge City in that category.
