The Dodge City Red Demons and Garden City Buffaloes are teaming together in an effort to claim a national spot sponsored by USA Today/High School Sports website.
The national publication is looking for people to vote on the top high school football rivalry in the country. The website is using Dodge City's players holding the Hatchet as the team of their promotion.
The publication is also looking for state rivalries with Kansas deciding between three: Dodge City vs. Garden City; Topeka Hayden vs. Holton; and Junction City vs. Manhattan. Voting for each of the state's top rivalry goes from Nov. 19 to Dec. 3 at 10 a.m.
The 51 state rivalries (including the District of Columbia) will be divided into four regions with voting taking place from Dec. 5 through Dec. 12 at 10 a.m.
The national competition will take place from Dec. 13 through Dec. 19 at 10 a.m.
The overall national champion rivalry will receive $10,000 to be divided equally between the two schools athletic departments. USA Today will report live on that rivalry game in 2013 and will present the schools with a trophy that will be kept each year by the winning team.
