According to this week's Facebook Friday, a majority of the Globe's readers plan to avoid the crowds and mayhem associated with Black Friday. But what if you could spend the day shopping, save some cash, and avoid seeing your neighbors become wild animals stalking low prices and over-the-top giveaways?
Various small businesses in Dodge City are participating in the busiest shopping day of the year, but in a different way than the department and chain stores.
Brown's Shoe Fit Company is offering a storewide deal of 25 percent off any regular priced item from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Then, from 1 p.m. Friday to close on Saturday, regular priced items will be 15 percent off. The store's owner, Chris Anderson said some exclusions will apply to the sale, but only on a few pieces. Brown's Shoe Fit Company is located at 1701 North 14th Avenue in Dodge City.
Another small business, Cummings Carousel, will have gourmet food, cider and complimentary gift wrap for Black Friday shoppers. In addition, the business will offer drawings for gift items throughout the day. Shari Thomas, owner of Cummings Carousel, said the store will also be running a promotion on Vera Bradley items- a Indigo Pop free tote bag with any $100 Vera Bradley purchase.
“We would love for people to come to the store on Black Friday,” Thomas said. “We need the business as much as the big box stores do, but we'll be doing things in a different way.”
Cummings Carousel will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The store is located at 2600 Central Avenue in Dodge City.
Carnegie Center for the Arts, located at 701 North 2nd Avenue, will be offering various discounts throughout the day on glasswork, jewelry, ceramic items, painting and drawings. All of the art at Carnegie is produced by Kansas artists.
Carnegie is also hosting a craft activity from 1 to 5 p.m., where kids and parents can paint and personalize either a ceramic ornament of a metal stocking. The cost to paint an ornament is $5; a stocking is $10.
Carnegie Center for the Arts will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tandy's Hallmark in Village Square Mall will have the expected holiday promotions for Black Friday shoppers. A highly sought after item, Hallmark's musical snowman pieces will be available. This year's addition to the Snowman series is called the Swooshin' Duo. Another hit Hallmark gift that will be promoted for Black Friday are the Interactive Story Buddies; plush stuffed animals that interact with their accompanying storybook. The newest addition to the story buddy family is a female husky dog named Bell. She and her counterpart, a male husky named Jingle, will interact with a movie scheduled to play on the Hallmark channel tonight. Check your local listings for details on the program.
Page 2 of 2 - A survey from the National Retail Federation (NRF) found 147 million shoppers plan to hit stores this Black Friday weekend. For some retailers, the holiday season can bring in as much as 40 percent of a store's annual sales according to the NRF. So rather than spending big bucks as cookie-cutter retailers, sleep in, shop local and keep your money in the community.
