  • Carnegie Center for the Arts is making some changes to this year's holiday homes tour.
"With some of the break-ins that have been happening, it's hard to get people to open their homes for several hours and to crowds of people," said Summer Bates, executive director of the Carnegie Center for the Arts.
So the organizers of the homes tour are tackling the problem with a little ingenuity.
The Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau is sponsoring the event and loaning the use of their two trolleys.
Those taking the homes tour will park downtown (the lot at Third and Spruce is suggested) and registration for the tour begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday Dec. 2 at Carnegie.
Trolleys will depart at 2 p.m., taking two different routes to the three homes on the tour, so no more than 22 people will be touring a home at any time.
The tour will also stop at the Santa Fe Depot this year.
At the conclusion of the tour, the trolleys will head to the Hampton Inn and Suites on the Boot Hill Resort and Casino complex, where a reception and tours will conclude the event.
The trolleys will return everyone to the Carnegie, where special discounts will be available in the consignment shop.
"We're hoping people will enjoy this format," Bates said. "It will highlight the social aspect of the event — having a good time and enjoying Christmas decorations."
Because of the new arrangement, taking the tour on the trolley is the only way to tour the homes. Driving yourself from home to home will not be allowed due to security concerns.
Tickets for the tour are $15 and may be purchased in advance at Carnegie, located at Second and Spruce.
"Proceeds from the event will benefit Carnegie Center for the Arts," Bates said.
"We count on our fundraising events to keep our programs going and take care of the building."
