Manor of the Plains is hosting a holiday open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 2.
There will be tours of the entire facility, snacks and hot cider, and door prizes. You'll also get a chance to see the newly-remodeled independent living dining room, which just reopened last Tuesday, and several independent living apartments which have recently undergone remodeling as well.
"Because we offer three levels of care — independent living, assisted care and health care — we have spaces available from time to time," said Kurt Lampe, marketing director. "Right now we're full in assisted and health. We have openings in independent living."
In order to improve service to potential independent living residents, the Manor has a special program called "Choices."
The program offers prospective residents choice of three sizes of apartments (studio, one bedroom or two bedroom).
The two bedroom apartments have hookups for washers and dryers.
"They can also select countertops, flooring colors, appliance colors and even wall colors," Lampe said.
The remodels also include a new walk-in onyx shower.
Also as part of the Choices program, residents can get the first and fifth month free with a garage thrown in for those two months.

Lunch is on me
In addition to remodeling the independent living apartments, the independent dining room has undergone some changes as well.
"It's part of that cultural change," Lampe said. "We wanted to give the residents additional opportunities to use their dining room throughout the day."
The independent dining room had been open only for the noon meal but now it's open all day.
And the whole room has been updated with new carpet, new furniture and an efficient and attractive new food service counter.
"The salad bar is self-chilled," Lampe said. "The staff just has to turn it on in the morning and it's ready to be stocked at lunch — it eliminates the need for filling a salad bar with ice."

A test run
Lampe also has a room called the 'staycation' room.
"It's a sample apartment that we can rent to anyone with an approved application for three to five nights. That gives them a chance to see what living here is like before they make their decision," Lampe said.
He also makes the apartment available for rental to friends and family of the residents when they're in town.
"It's usually booked," Lampe said.
The Choices program continues through the end of the year.
"One of the biggest problems we have is that there's no one in town to help these seniors sort, pack and move when they decide to," Lampe said.
