  • Ms. Wheelchair Kansas is looking for nominations of wheelchair mobile women of achievement to be contestants in its 2013 program. Contestants may be self-nominated, or may be nominated by another person, group or organization.
"There are two ways to nominate someone for this program," Carrie Greenwood, state coordinator, said. "First, is a pre-nomination where whoever is doing the nominating fills out a form on our website, and we contact the nominee and send them an application. The second is a full nomination where the nominator talks directly to the nominee and they fill out the application directly and send it back to us along with a letter of recommendation and the $150 entry fee, and a picture to be included in the program."
Either nomination is acceptable, and will be accepted until Jan 7, 2013. Usually the entry fee is obtained through local sponsors or the nominator.
"The Ms. Wheelchair Kansas Program is not a beauty contest," states a recent press release, "but rather a competition to select the most articulate, accomplished delegate to serve as a role model and spokesperson for people with disabilities in Kansas." It goes on to say: "Contestants will be scored based on their accomplishments, self-perception, communication and projection skills."
Contestants in the program must meet several requirements to participate including being a U.S. citizen between the ages of 21 and 60, utilizing a wheelchair for 100 percent of daily community mobility and being a resident of Kansas for at least the last six months. Marital status is not a consideration. For a full list of requirements visit the Ms. Wheelchair Kansas website; www.mswheelchairkansas.org.
"This program is really a way to celebrate and recognize wheelchair mobile women in Kansas," Greenwood said. "And it also gives them a chance to speak, and educate others on a platform they are passionate about."
Each contestant is required to give a speech related to a disability during the program. The winner will then travel around the state educating people on the platform during their reign.
"The platform doesn't have to be wheelchair related necessarily," Greenwood said, "It could be about playing sports with a disability, parenting with a disability or the challenges of independent living with a disability. There are so many things contestants could speak about, it really just depends on what their passions are."
The Ms. Wheelchair Kansas event will take place on March 15-17, 2013, at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. The weekend will include several different judging events and other activities.
