The Dodge City Lady Demons stressed defense and rebounding as keys for success this season and they used both to stall the Goodard offense in a 41-30 victory over the Lady Lions in the first game under new head coach Kelley Snodgrass.
The Lady Demons held Goddard to only nine field goals on 47 attempts (19.1 percent) as Goddard's top returning player (Emily Rausch) missed all 15 of her shots on the night. Dodge City also outrebounded Goddard by nine. The Lady Demons scored 17 points off of turnovers and 10 on second chances.
"I was very pleased with the rebounding ," Snodgrass said after the game. "We had a huge margin at halftime and I was pleased with how we finished the game. Defensively, we were disciplined and guarded the way we were taught. The girls came out intense. They had some three-point shooters, but we got out there in time. The girls did a great job."
Katrina Roenfeldt led the Lady Demons with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. Alexis Sanchez added nine points (all in the first half) and Chandra Sain eight in the victory. Sanchez also had 12 rebounds for the game.
"We've been waiting for the season to start," Roenfeldt said. "I've been personally looking forward to this season. I like to get after it and play real aggressive. The coach is asking us to play our rules."
Jenna Clasen led Goddard in scoring with eight points.
The Lady Demons started strong on its defense, not allowing a field goal for the first six minutes of the game to build a 7-1 lead. Dodge City had made only one field goal during the stretch, but added five free throws in the run. Goodard made a late run and trailed DCHS 10-6 after the first quarter.
The Lions were able to tie the game midway through the second stanza before Dodge City closed out the half with an eight-point run to lead 20-12 at intermission. Roenfeldt scored six points in the stanza.
