The Dodge City Salvation Army is working to provide a Christmas to all area children this year. One way they are helping families in need is by participating in a national toy drive called 'Fill the Truck'.
A covered Salvation Army truck will be parked outside of their Dodge City location, 1100 Avenue E from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 8. Anyone who wishes to bring in a new toy or coat may stop by at anytime to make a donation.
"This is the first time we've done the Fill the Truck toy drive," said Gabriela Rangel, a captain of the Salvation Army. "We've done the Angel Tree and other fundraisers in the past, but this year, we thought we'd try this."
The toys and coats that are collected will be given out to children in need this holiday season.
"We will try and help as many families as we can," Rangel said. "There is no cut off date for someone to contact us for help at the holidays."
The Salvation Army is looking for toys for children ages newborn to 12-years-old. They ask that donated toys be new, not used.
"Christmas should be special for these children, and they should get a brand new toy," Rangel said.
In addition to the toys that will be collected Saturday, the Salvation Army is always accepting non-perishable food items to include in Christmas food baskets that will be handed out to the families.
"Our goal is to have enough food for at least 270 families this year," Rangel said. "It's a big goal, but I think we can do it."
Another way to help out the Salvation Army is by donating spare change to the annual Red Kettle Campaign anytime between now and Dec. 24. Look for the red kettles located all around Dodge City.
