JUNCTION CITY -- The Dodge City Lady Demons knew they were not going to have a height advantage Saturday afternoon against Junction City in their matchup at Shenk Gymnasium.
The Lady Demons did have the athleticism to be able to control the game despite the height disadvantage on the way to a 46-37 victory over the Lady Jays.
Dodge City did a much better job of taking care of the ball and attacking the basket less than 24 hours after getting being taken out of their game by Manhattan the night before.
Dodge City (2-1) officially was 10-of-28 from the field, but were able to get to the free throw line by forcing the Lady Jays to foul on shots with the Lady Demons 22-of-37 at the charity stripe. The Lady Demons also were able to attack the boards on both ends as they forced the Junction City players to tire as the game progressed and almost had as many rebounds as the host squad (32-26 for Junction City).
Katrina Roenfeldt led the Lady Demons for the second time in the young season with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Chandra Sain added 13 and Alexis Sanchez 10.
Shanna Witt led the Lady Jays (1-2) with 16 points and Peyton Pender had eight in the loss.
Neither team shot well in the opening quarter: Dodge City was 2-of-9 from the field while Junction City was 2-of-14 and didn't score any second chance points despite grabbing eight offensive rebounds and having a 15-4 advantage in boards. The Lady Demons led 5-4 after the stanza.
The two teams traded the lead for most of the second quarter before a six-point run -- all off Dodge City turnovers -- put the Lady Jays ahead 18-14 at intermission.
The Lady Demons scored five of the first seven points of the third quarter to tie the game, then answered a Junction City five-point run with an eight-point run to close out the stanza as Dodge City led 29-28 with one stanza remaining. Dodge City scored eight points off of Junction City turnovers in the period.
Dodge City increased the score to 38-31 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining and Junction City never got closer than five points the rest of the game. The Lady Demons hit only one field goal in the final quarter, but made 15 of their 23 free throws to seal the victory.
