  • The Dodge City Conquistadors returned to the Civic Center for the first time this season Saturday afternoon with a 72-65 overtime victory over the Labette Cardinals in a inter-division matchup between Jayhawk Conference teams.
The Conqs outscored Labette 10-3 in the extra frame after the Cardinals came back from six points down with less than two minutes left in regulation to force overtime.
"We didn't take care of the ball and didn't execute at the end of regulation," said Dodge City coach Kyle Campbell. "We were able to get back and execute well in overtime.
Dodge City (7-5) led by as many as 12 points in the first half before Labette scored the final six points before intermission to trail 37-32 at halftime.
One aspect of the game Campbell admits he wasn't expecting was the 3-point shooting of the Cardinals (6-5). Labette had hit only 12 3-point shots during their first 10 games, so the Conqs didn't think they would rely on long distance shots.
"It was one of those things where we came out with our game plan and they came out and did something we haven't seen," Campbell said.
Greg Travis led the Conqs in scoring with 28 points, including hitting all four of his 3-point attempts.
"He was really good for us," Campbell said of the lllinois-Chicago transfer. "He was doing what we have been asking of him."
Aaron Tate added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Dodge City, despite spending the last six minutes and overtime with four fouls in the game.
The Conqs' next game will be next Saturday against Missouri State-West Plains at the Civic Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
