Central Station and Rocking M Radio are hoping to make a merrier Christmas for 12 local families.
"You hear about families that are needy every year — I was one growing up — but everyone deserves to have a great Christmas," said Albert Vasquez, owner of Central Station.
The promotion is called "Twelve Days of Giving." Twelve families, nominated by local service organizations, will receive a turkey and all the trimmings plus a share of whatever clothes, toys and gift certificates are donated. Santa will deliver the Christmas supplies Dec. 21. The families will remain anonymous.
"We're asking people to take donations of canned goods, toys, clothes, gift certificates or cash to the Rocking M Radio offices at 2601 Central Ave., Suite C outside of Village Square Mall, or to Central Station at 207 E. Wyatt Earp Blvd. We'll make sure there's enough food for a Christmas dinner," Vasquez said.
Both organizations will keep updated information on their websites and Facebook pages to inform donors what items are still needed.
Dance for the cause
To help fill the baskets, Central Station is hosting a benefit dance from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Dec. 14.
"It will be a Retro Night, with music from the 70s, 80s and 90s — country and dance music. Everyone will have a great time and admission is a donation to the 12 Days of Giving for the families," Vasquez said.
"It's a way for the Rocking M Radio family and the Central Station family to express our appreciation back to the people of Dodge City," said Perla Bojorquez, business development executive with Rocking M Radio.
"If we get enough donations, maybe the Christmas cheer will last until New Years," Vasquez said. "Maybe people could think about donating something every day for twelve days — that would be awesome."
Organizers hope to continue the tradition in future holiday seasons.
"We want to wish everybody a merry Christmas and a happy new year. We thank them for a wonderful year and hope for better years in the future," Vasquez said.
