  • With a young team with talent, one aspect that is only learned with experience is to not the thought of any game being an easy win get into the players heads.
The Cimarron Lady Bluejays had that happen in the first half in their Hi-Plains League against Elkhart, but a halftime discussion got the visitors back on track in a 64-46 victory to improve to 6-0 on the season.
"We're in the break where we have the record we wanted and how we wanted to be on the floor," said Cimarron head coach David Ediger. "The one thing our girls have to learn is to come out of the locker room ready to play. The girls are working extremely hard, but sometimes they think a game is going to be easy. That comes with a young team that is getting used to the varsity level."
The Bluejays lead 28-22 at halftime over the Wildcats as Cimarron looked at a box-and-one defense as Elkhart made sure to have a player on Morgan Ediger at all times. The plan backfired as Ashtynn Burns scored 11 points in the second quarter and eight in the third to lead the Cimarron attack.
Cimarron's defense also clamped down after intermission, allowing only two field goals as the Bluejays outscored Elkhart 23-6 in the third quarter.
"We played defense and better care of the ball. That was the difference between that and the first half," Ediger said. "We played as bad as we could in the first half. We turned it over too much and didn't play defense that well. I think some of it was that we have played so many games and part was we didn't come ready to play and I think our girls thought it would be an easier game to play."
Burns scored 23 points and Eva Koopman added 14 in the victory. Rebecca Dupree added nine and Ediger eight in the contest.
