The Eisenhower Lady Tigers spoiled the home opener for the Dodge City Lady Demons and took a page out of the DCHS book in their success.
The visitors from Goddard forced 22 Dodge City turnovers for 23 points on the way to a 49-41 victory over the Lady Demons. Eisenhower also shot better from the field than Dodge City, making nine of 19 shots after intermission and 17-of-40 for the game.
"I don't know if it was first game jitters, but we were out of snyc tonight," said DCHS girls basketball head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "We played great our first three games defensively and we have to get back to that mentality. Defense is going to be a key for us and we can't allow teams to score 49 points."
Dodge City (2-2) made less than a third of their shots on the night (15-of-47). Katrina Roenfeldt was 6-of-11 from the floor for 14 points and also grabbed 12 rebound for a double-double. Alexis Sanchez added nine, Ciera Lampe seven and Jessica Harshberger six for the Lady Demons.
"We weren't executing well on offense and Eisenhower did well better handling the ball tonight," Snodgrass said. "We had some mishaps on defense as well."
Brynn Minor led Eisenhower (3-2) with 18 points (13 after intermission), while Ali Blasi added 14 and Kilah Hoenscheidt 10 in the victory.
The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in the contest. After more than six minutes of play without scoring, Roenfeldt and Chandra Sain hit three-pointers to cut the deficit to two by the end of the stanza.
Eisenhower scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second quarter, but Dodge City was able to whittle the deficit back down to 23-18 by intermission. The Lady Tigers scored 12 points off of turnovers in the first half, while Dodge City scored nine off of Eisenhower miscues.
The Lady Tigers pushed the lead back up to double-digits to open the second half before Dodge City and the Lady Demons never got closer than five points the rest of the game.
Dodge City's next game will be Tuesday in their conference opener at Garden City. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
